The Immigration Minister of Canada announced that students are being granted an extra 18-
month extension to their open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program in
order to keep more international students in the country.
This work permit extension has been offered to those international students whose permits have
either expired or are set to expire between 20 September 2021 and 31 December 2022. The
Minister stated that thousands of jobs remain to be filled and acknowledged the economic
contribution of international students to Canada’s community and economy.
This extension will allow thousands of international students to stay in Canada for a longer time
and help them receive an 18-month open work permit. This special provision will facilitate a
growth potential in the economy which will allow more international students to choose Canada
as their home.
Students who have graduated from a Designated Learning Institution in Canada will be eligible
for this extension and graduate students are permitted to work while they await a response to
their application. The information on the application process will be posted soon on the website.
