Women to lead 4 out of 5 top universities across the world

Women have been climbing the ladder even in Asia. The first woman to become the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was Neuroscientist Nancy Ip. She is the first woman leader in the region of a top 200 university in the past five years. For nearly 20 years, she has been at the institution. She is its fifth president and the first woman in the role of leadership.

It was found that four out of the top five universities in the world which include Harvard, Oxford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Cambridge, for the first time ever, will be led by women. According to information provided by the World University Rankings 2023 released by the Times Higher Education, this will come true by this year’s July.

Top Universities with Women in the leading Positions

  • Oxford University has been ranked first in THE’s World University Rankings and it is currently headed by Irene Tracey.
  • Harvard University has been ranked second in THE’s World University Rankings and Claudine Gay will take up her leadership role in July.
  • Cambridge University has been ranked third in THE’s World University Rankings and Deborah Prentice will take up her leadership role in July.
  • MIT has been ranked fifth in THE’s World University Rankings and it is currently headed by Sally Kornbluth.

World University Rankings 2023 released by Times Higher Education has shown that nearly a quarter, i.e., 48 of the top 200 universities in the world are being led by women presidents or vice-chancellors. The numbers have increased significantly from last year which consisted of only 43 women in the top positions. Compared to last year, there are 12 percent more women in these positions. Moreover, compared to five years ago, there are 41 percent more women in these positions.

This increase is due to the increase in appointments in the US and Germany as the data states that a high proportion of the top 200 universities are led by women in the US. This equals 16 out of 58 universities. Moreover, out of the top 200 universities, 2.5 per cent are led by women of colour. That is 10 per cent of women-led institutions are led by women of colour.

Women at Top Positions in German Universities

Compared to last year, five leading German universities are headed by women which is an increase from three. This includes:

  • Karla Pollmann leads the University of Tübingen
  • Kerstin Krieglstein leads the University of Freiburg
  • Geraldine Rauch leads the Technical University of Berlin.

These were the first women to preside over their institutions. This fact holds true for other European countries as well such as France in which 3 institutes are led by women, the Netherlands in which 5 institutes are led by women and the UK in which 8 institutes are led by women.

Women Climbing the ladder in Asia

Women have been climbing the ladder even in Asia. The first woman to become the President of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology was Neuroscientist Nancy Ip. She is the first woman leader in the region of a top 200 university in the past five years. For nearly 20 years, she has been at the institution. She is its fifth president and the first woman in the role of leadership.

Currently, even Saudi Arabia has a woman leader. However, the leader is in an interim position. The interim woman leader of King Abdulaziz University which is the largest university in Saudi Arabia is Hana Abdullah Al-Nuaim.

According to these figures, it is seen that there has been a constant year-on-year increase of women in the top positions in global universities. It was 43 in 2022, 41 in 2021, 39 in 2020, and 34 in 2019 and 2018. This has come as good news by bringing hope for equality. It was revealed from the data of THE that out of 27 countries that have their universities featured in the top 200, nearly 12 countries, i.e., 44 percent did not possess any women at the leading position in top institutions.
