Among the students who are aspiring to study abroad, Germany has been steadily gaining rank as a popular study-abroad destination. There are over 400,000 international students across the higher education institutions of the Schengen member country. As of 2021-2022, there are a total of 440,564 international students enrolled in the higher education sector of Germany.
In a matter of 5 years, from 2014 to 2019, there has been an increase of approximately 30.9 per cent in the international student numbers in the country. Thus, from 2014 to 2022, there has been an increase of 37 per cent. Various reasons can be attributed to the increase in numbers.
Around 120,000 German and international students were surveyed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in the “Benchmark International University” (BintHo) study. The Positive Side

Students chose Germany due to the attractive range of courses and good study conditions, good career prospects after graduation and the international reputation of German degrees. Only a quarter of the students studied exclusively in German while half of the international students were enrolled in degree programs of the English language alone.
However, depending on the type of degree, there were clear differences: Only 27 per cent of Bachelor’s students studied in English while two-thirds of Master’s students pursued their course in the English language. The majority of the surveyed international students would recommend the university they are pursuing their education to others. After graduation, more than 60 per cent wish to stay in Germany. The number of international students has spiked from 301,350 to 440,564 ever since the Government approved tuition-free education in 2014 in Germany.
Only about 56 per cent of international students were able to secure a seat at the university of their choice in Germany. Key sources of information such as the website of the institution, the information provided by the DAAD and ranking and assessment portals must be considered while choosing a higher education institution. Moreover, friends or family members who are or have studied at the institution must be contacted to gain the necessary details.
The Negative Side
Finding accommodation represents a challenge for around 60 per cent of international students. Last year, till mid-September, more than 35,000 students at eleven university towns in Germany, namely, Berlin, Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Erlangen-Nuremberg, Hamburg, Gottingen, Hanover, Cologne, Heidelberg, Mainz and Munich were waiting for their response on their application for a seat in a hall of residence.
There is an absolute short supply of affordable housing at the beginning of a winter semester once again.
