- British universities suffer a drop in the number of applications from international students after a double blow caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The number of students that applied for admissions in 2021 from abroad fell by 8% and the number of admissions from EU students almost halved.
- Many students deferred their places in the UK last year but many who deferred in 2020 came back in 2021 to commence their studies. Many institutions have started remote learning to help overcome the pandemic wave but some are still facing financial issues.
- Most of the losses come from the fall in international enrolments and increase in balance sheet provisions relating to pension deficits. The universities are however working to provide a range of support to the students including those from overseas.
- With the launch of its Graduate Route last summer, the UK is hoping to attract more international students and admissions teams will continue to ensure that the admissions process are fair and transparent.
