UK universities count on Indian students

As of 2022, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian students of over 13 lakh have been studying abroad. The largest number of Indian students about 4.65 lakhs have been pursuing higher studies in America. The coming year has been forecasted by considering students who are again looking for options to study abroad.

The data, however, suggests that British Universities of lower-ranking are falling out of international favour. European applicants were lost due to Brexit. However, international students who are performing highly are not much willing to pay for a product that is losing its lusture.

Recently, the prestigious universities of Britain have a business model that is struggling to maintain financial stability. On Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 list, the top educational institutions of the country have retained the global crown.

However, few of the big prestigious universities have a crumbling model of higher education in Britain. In the UK, several universities are hit by funding. Staffs have also been striking. 70,000 people at 150 universities have protested against falling pay, poor working conditions and pension cuts in the last month according to a report by Bloomberg news agency.

Also, the government of Britain has mooted the capping of the number of foreign students. At the end of the 2021 academic year, almost 30% of 274 universities and colleges were already in deficit. This was revealed from a data by the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

Earlier this year, the parliamentary committee was told by 24 top institutions including Oxford and Cambridge that the government needed to increase funding. On 25 October, Moody, a Rating agency downgraded the rating of prominent UK colleges such as Cambridge, Oxford, University College London, and others.

Support from Indians and Chinese

Many have been effectively running companies that are not viable and are much more reliant on students from India and China who are paying higher fees according to some academicians. Funding system is hopelessly compromised in Britain. It is largely dependent on the money of overseas students, mainly students from China.

The data, however, suggests that British Universities of lower-ranking are falling out of international favour. European applicants were lost due to Brexit. However, international students who are performing highly are not much willing to pay for a product that is losing its lusture.

According to the data from UK universities, from China, last year, new enrollments fell for the first time. It dropped to 4.9 per cent to 99,160 students. However, enrollments from Indian climbed to almost 27 per cent. This shows that the rate of growth is slowing.

Strengthening Commonwealth

In higher education, the UK still punches above its weight when compared to the rest of Europe. It has been strengthening ties with Commonwealth countries from the time it has left the EU. The UK and India, this year, signed an agreement that further aimed at boosting applicants.

Universities and their staff are becoming more desperate. More than half of the employees, according to the University and College Union showed signs of depression. It was seen that 21 per cent of the academics were working an extra 16 hours per week above the hours contracted.

The funding chaos has complicated access to research money post-Brexit. The refusal of EU to grant access to international science programs to the UK universities has made the government to put forward a 591 million dollar gap in resources.

Universities in the UK represent 140 institutions. It is calling for talks across the country about the industry\’s financial viability. Since the 1900s, funding has been the forecast to drop down when adjusted for inflation.
