UGC to unveil 4-year UG program framework

The University Grants Commission has finalised the framework for the four-year undergraduate programme. This framework will be implemented in all higher education institutions.

The University Grants Commission has finalised the framework for the four-year undergraduate programme. This framework will be implemented in all higher education institutions from the academic session 2023-24.

UGC will share these rules with all universities across the country by next week. Most of the state and private universities will also implement the FYUGP apart from all 45 central universities. Also, many deemed universities will be giving consent to implement the programme.

The framework will be implemented for all new students from 2023-24. However, the FYUGP may get approval for the University Grants Commission for old students currently pursuing first and second years as well. Still, students will not be forced to opt for the new framework. Those who wish to continue with the old framework can do so.

FREEDOM TO FRAME RULES

The universities will be given their own freedom to make some rules and regulations. Students studying in the final year will also be given the opportunity to be a part of FYUGP if the universities assent to it. This is because results will be known after four years if only new students are given the chance to enrol under FYUGP. However, results would be visible earlier, if old students get a chance to join it.

A 55 per cent mark will be mandatory for admission to PhD for students who pursue a two-year post-graduation and M.Phil after the completion of FYUGP. However, the M.Phil programme may be removed in a short while due to the new education policy. Also, many teachers and teacher organisations have registered objections to this new framework. This may put an additional financial burden on the students.
