The University was established in 1959 and is the first-born university. It is located 5 km away from Kathmandu at Kirtipur.

The Tribhuvan University of Nepal has been ranked number one in the world in the World University Ranking. This has been done on the basis of the number of students. Tribhuvan University currently hosts 460,632 students at Tribhuvan University.

A total of 466,828 students are studying at the University and Health Academy in Nepal. 76.4% of the total students are studying at Tribhuvan University. Moreover, 6.98% of students are studying at Pokhara University and 5.9% at Purwanchal University. However, only 3.99% of students are studying at Kathmandu University.

Other universities and health academies host less than 3% of students. Of the total number of students, 89.2% have completed graduation and 10.2% have completed PG. Similarly, 0.35%, 0.28% and 0.05% have completed PhD, M.Phil., and post-graduate diplomas respectively.

The enrollment ratio is higher at Tribhuvan University. Out of the total students, 43.43% of students are in the Faculty of Management. Similarly, 19.1%, 12.61%, 8% and 6% are enrolled in the Faculty of Education, Humanities and Sociology, Science and Engineering respectively. Moreover, 38% and 5.95% are enrolled medical science.
