Times Higher Education Rankings 2023

Times Higher Education Rankings 2023

According to the Times Higher Education Rankings 2023, IISc has topped the list among Indian Universities.

This year, the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore has bagged the first position placing it in the 251-300 band among the universities in India. This is according to the Times Higher Education Rankings 2023. The ranking of five Indian universities is among the world\’s top 500 universities.

Moreover, the ranking of 22 Indian universities is below 800. They include DTU, IIT Indore, Graphic Era University, Jamia Hamdard University, IIT Delhi, Kalasalingam Academy of Research and Education, JNU and the KIIT University under the 601-800 bracket.

75 Indian institutes featured in THE World University Rankings 2023. This is an increase from 71 in the last year but none of the institutions featured in the top-250 league.

Why have IITs not participated in the ranking?

India is the sixth most-represented country in the 2023 list. This comes as a surprise as seven of the first-generation IITs have boycotted the rankings. From India, only 31 universities were ranked in the 2017 edition of THE ranking.

Citing concerns over transparency, IITs of Delhi, Guwahati, Bombay, Kharagpur, Kanpur, Roorkee and Madras issued a joint statement stating that they would not participate in THE World University Rankings. However, the rankings still represent the most reliable research mission that is published globally.

India has embraced the need to join the global knowledge economy network. This is to ensure that universities of the subcontinent compete, collaborate and assess themselves against the best universities across the globe.

Above all, the performance portrayed this year shows that Indian higher education institutions have been supporting inward investment, international collaboration and reducing brain drain. Credits are given explicitly to everyone who has worked in the transformation including political leaders.

However, the University of Oxford has retained the top spot. Moreover, Harvard University and the University of Cambridge occupy the second and third positions. 1,799 universities from 104 countries and regions are ranked in this edition of the rankings.
