The University Grants Commission has asked all the higher educational institutions to adopt new guidelines for smooth admission of international students. UGC formulated these guidelines on July 29, 2021. This guidelines will help in facilitating smooth and simple admission of international students in higher educational institutions of India.
The UGC has also framed guidelines for international students for the admission and creation of supernumerary seats. The framing of these guidelines is to attract international students to Indian higher education system. This will also make India a preferred destination for International students.
Indian HEIs may admit international students on the basis of the equivalence of entry qualifications that they have. HEIs must adopt a transparent process while admitting international students. Up to 25 per cent supernumerary seats will be created for international students.
Also, the UGC has directed HEIs to develop \’Office for International Students\’. This will contain year-wise details of the international students along with the number of seats available for them, fee prescribed, admission process and eligibility conditions on their websites.
The framing of guidelines is in accordance with the NEP 2020. NEP 2020 holds internationalization of education as an important aspect. This means, there must be an integration of international and intercultural dimension in higher education. Many institutions now work to increase their international outreach.
