NEET, JEE Merger with CUET to be announced 2 years in advance

CUET-UG 2023 is a common gateway for UG admissions in central universities across the country. This is the second edition of the exam and is scheduled from May 21 to 31. As a part of Plan B, Extra computers and extra centres have been arranged. This will ensure the shifting of the candidates there in case there are any glitches. Thus, the exam for a particular shift will not be cancelled.

This year, it has been announced that the Common University Entrance Test (CUET)-UG will be conducted in three shifts instead of two shifts as planned earlier. Also, according to the chairman of the University Grants Commission, the announcement of the plans for its merger with crucial entrance exams like JEE and NEET will be at least two years in advance. Moreover, he also stated that the UGC and the NTA are prepared to ensure that the CUET-UG 2023 second edition is conducted without any glitches.

He stated that there were glitches at a few centres from the experience of the students last year. Therefore, and this year, all issues related to these experiences that the students went through will be taken care of. It will also be made sure that this time the students only focus on exams. Moreover, they need not on have their focus on any possible glitches and how the exam is being conducted.

This is being done by identifying the centres well in advance. Moreover, the availability of infrastructure is ensured which includes the computers, technical personnel at the centres and bandwidth. This will ensure that the second edition of CUET-UG 2023 is glitch-free. Several glitches were pointed out during the exam last time. However, all issues have been ironed out this year. A plan has been chalked out keeping in mind the experience of the students. Thus, the candidates must only worry about the exam and not about any glitches that took place last year.

Moreover, from this year, the academic calendar will be brought back on track through the schedule that has been designed. Moreover, the chairman of the University Grants Commission stated that the exam will be conducted in three shifts from this year, which is a deviation from the usual pattern.

CUET Merger with NEET, JEE

The chairman of the University Grants Commission was also asked about the proposal to merge CUET with the medical entrance exam NEET and the engineering entrance exam JEE. He stated that this will definitely happen. Moreover, the details are being worked out. However, the merger will be announced at least two years in advance. Therefore, the students can prepare accordingly.

According to the National Education Policy 2020, the burden on the students must be reduced through the conduction of a single national-level entrance examination. Thus, the students can be mentally prepared for the announcement given in accordance with the NEP and there is a possibility in the coming years of such a merger in the coming years. Internal work on taking this initiative forward is going on. Above all, several stakeholders are being consulted.

Last year, in March, the University Grants Commission announced that UG admissions will be conducted through a common entrance test in all central universities. Thus, the criteria for admission through Class 12 marks were ruled out. In July, last year, the debut edition of the CUET-UG was conducted. The Debut edition was marred by glitches. Therefore, the NTA was prompted to cancel the exam at multiple centres. Several students were informed about the cancellation before the exam. However, many of them were turned away from centres on the day of the examination.

The CUET-UG was the common gateway for undergraduate admissions in all central universities and it invited 14.9 lakh registrations last year. It surpassed JEE-Main’s average registration of nine lakhs and became the second-biggest entrance exam in the country. This year, 11.5 lakh registrations have already been received. March 30 is the deadline for CUET-UG 2023 applications. This year, the number of registrations is expected to surpass last year’s numbers.

Details regarding the Normalization of scores

Moreover, the normalization of scores will have minimal to no errors this year as it reduced the scores of many and made it difficult for them to get to their dream college. Instead of over one and a half months, the schedule of the exam has been compressed to 10 days. This will minimize the errors in the normalization process. This is because the variation is more when the exam is held over a longer period of time. A panel comprising professors from Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi University and IIT Delhi will decide on the normalisation formula using the “equipercentile method”.

The centres of CUET have been identified in three categories. They are categorized as categories A, B and C. Category C centres are those centres where glitches took place last year. This year, those centres will not be used. Category B will include centres in which some groundwork must be done and made sure that the appropriate infrastructure is available. Centres under category A are absolutely fine and will be used normally.
