According to an analysis released in London on Monday, during the 2021 census, nearly 43,175 students were enrolled at higher educational institutions. This number was followed closely by China with 41,810 Chinese students. Thus, 11.2 per cent of students are enrolled in the two regions of the United Kingdom.

A majority of students from India recorded English as their main language. However, the other languages that were recorded in the census were Urdu, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Gujarati and Marathi. According to the ONS, an international student is defined as someone who was “a usual resident in England and Wales and met all the following criteria: non-UK-born; non-UK passport holder; in full-time education; aged 18 years or over on Census Day and aged 17 years or over upon most recent arrival in the UK”.
