Largest International Student Cohort in England, Wales – Indian students

India with 11.6 per cent, China with 11.2 per cent, Romania with 9.5 per cent and Nigeria with 5.3 per cent were the top four countries that were responsible for the birth of international students according to the census. London with 33.9 per cent was responsible for a third of the international student population. The most likely to be employed were Indian students at 11.9 per cent. The first country whose students were most likely to be employed was Romania at 21.4 per cent.

The student population in England and Wales comprises a large number of Indians, making them the top nationality. According to an analysis released in London on Monday, during the 2021 census, nearly 43,175 students were enrolled at higher educational institutions. This number was followed closely by China with 41,810 Chinese students. Thus, 11.2 per cent of students are enrolled in the two regions of the United Kingdom.

Census Data from the Office for National Statistics

It was found that Indian students made up 11.6 per cent of the non-UK-born student population. This was revealed through data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The Office for National Statistics analyzes census statistics in order to release information across various subcategories. The census is based on the responses of the online census conducted in March 2021 for England and Wales.

Definition of International students as per the ONS

A majority of students from India recorded English as their main language. However, the other languages that were recorded in the census were Urdu, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, Punjabi, Tamil, Gujarati and Marathi. According to the ONS, an international student is defined as someone who was “a usual resident in England and Wales and met all the following criteria: non-UK-born; non-UK passport holder; in full-time education; aged 18 years or over on Census Day and aged 17 years or over upon most recent arrival in the UK”.

According to the ONS, in England and Wales, International students in higher education (HE) are an important sub-group of the population. People migrate to the UK with education as one of the major reasons. Through tuition fees, international students contribute to the income of universities. They also contribute to the economy of the communities in which they live.

Key insights from the UK Home Office data

The UK Home Office data collated by the ONS in November last year revealed that, for the first time, Students from India had overtaken students from China as the largest group of foreign students studying across the United Kingdom. These figures co-relate with the census data. The census data focuses on the regions of England and Wales. It also covers other characteristics such as country of birth, housing and employment.

At the time of the 2021 census, there were 373,600 non-UK passport-holding, non-UK-born international students in England and Wales in all. Nearly two-thirds of the students were born in non-EU countries and the remaining were born in European Union (EU) countries. These residence types of students varied by age. Most students aged between 18 and 25 years live in an all-student household or communal establishment. However, most students belonging to the age group of 26 years and above lived in single-family or multiple-family households.
