The university has emphasized that it will not tolerate violence by students.
The Vice-Chancellor stated that Jawaharlal Nehru University applied for Institute of Eminence status. This is five years after the central government notified the scheme. The Vice-Chancellor had stated that until then, the university had not applied for eminence status.
She added that the university submitted its application in the first week of this month as a huge document. The university wants to work on a think tank, a JNU bookstore, a JNU publishing unit, the university library and a faculty club. The university has emphasized that it will not tolerate violence by students.
The Union Cabinet had earlier, in August 2017, approved UGC’s ‘Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities Regulations 2017’. The regulations will create an enabling architecture for 10 public as well as private institutions in order to emerge as world-class institutions.
DEPRIVATION POINTS
In order to look into filling reserved seats at the PhD level, the university has constituted a committee and introduced elements of the deprivation points level. The Vice-Chancellor has also expressed interest in reintroducing the deprivation points model.
As this model is in conflict with the reservation policy, it is not been introduced currently. JNU is working on adjusting both the deprivation points and the reservation policies. Earlier, JNU was unable to fill up the reserved positions and they went vacant. Thus, the deprivation points came in.
The committee has been asked to look into the problem of reserved category seats going vacant and the use of deprivation points to help other students enter the university.
