Jamia Millia Islamia - Likely to have its own entrance examination for admissions - FYUP to be implemented

Major central universities in Delhi adopted admissions to UG courses through CUET partially or wholly in the academic session 2022-23. For the first edition of the examination, more than 14 lakh candidates appeared. Moreover, according to the chairman of the UGC, CUET for PG admissions will be initiated in the academic session 2022. However, the CUET-PG will not be made compulsory and remain optional for the central universities.

Jamia Millia Islamia is expected to stick to its own entrance examination in order for timely admission for the upcoming academic session 2023-2024. The university has no plans to implement the Common University Entrance Test 2023. The CUET examination was introduced last year and the JMI did not adopt the examination as an admission criterion to all its undergraduate and postgraduate courses. However, if opted for admitting students through CUET to 10 UG courses. This year, the number will likely be increasing.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that they will be taking admissions through CUET in several courses. She assured that the numbers will be increasing this year. The university offers 62 UG courses and 72 PG courses. Recently, the Academic Council decided that admissions to a few UG courses at the University will be done through CUET similar to last year. The matter will be presented to the Executive Council of the University for taking the ultimate decision.

The courses that will be offered admissions through CUET will be decided at a meeting of the Deans of the Faculties. The meeting will be chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. During the recently held Academic Council meeting, it was decided that the admissions to the courses that are governed by the regulatory bodies will be done through the testing agencies that are prescribed by those regulatory bodies similar to the JEE, NEET, and others. Moreover, for the other remaining courses, the University will be conducting its own entrance tests in order to ensure timely admissions.

Introduction of FYUP in JMI

From the upcoming academic session 2023-2024, Jamia Millia Islamia is likely to offer four-year undergraduate programmes. The programs will also be flexible with multiple exit and entry options. This proposal was discussed in the recently held Academic Council (AC) meeting and will be presented in the next Executive Council meeting as it is the highest decision-making body of the university.

The Vice-Chancellor stated that they have tried to adopt all aspects of the National Education Policy 2020. The members had adopted the guidelines laid down by the UGC for multiple entry and exit options in academic courses offered in HEIs. They have also adopted the implementation of the layout of restructured FYUP in the recently held Academic Council meeting.

The UG degree will be a three or four-year program with multiple entry and exit options if the decision is approved by the Executive Council. This was a guideline laid down by the NEP 2020. Currently, the UG programs offered by the university are of three-year duration. Other institutions such as the DU had already opted for the FYUP.

Multiple Entries and Exit Options

If a student exits after one year under the multiple exit and entry options, they will be given a certificate. If they leave after two years, they will be given a diploma. Moreover, if they leave after three years, they will be given a bachelor’s degree. However, only if the student completes four years, they will be offered a bachelor’s degree with honours or research.

Thus, flexibility will be offered in the curriculum and along with novel course options. Moreover, discipline-specific specialisations will be offered which will enable them to adopt different designs of the PG courses. According to the curriculum and credit framework released by the UGC for UG programs, students will be provided with multiple options for entry and exit. Also, a choice will be given the option to choose between a single major or double major or interdisciplinary choice.

Students will be able to pursue a four-year honours degree which will be offered in two categories — honours and honours with research. However, till the four-year program is fully implemented, the three-year UG courses will not be discontinued. Moreover, graduates will be able to directly join a PhD program under the new pattern.
