It was reported by a recent study that International students who go to Canada for their higher education tend to remain there. This was exclusively seen in the province which gave them a study permit for the upcoming period of education or work.
Except for the Atlantic provinces, for every region, more than half of the former international students who are employed in the country were working in the province where they had studied. This report was given by The Conference Board of Canada.
A report was released by the After School: Keeping International Students In-Province. It stated that over 60 per cent of the students who did their higher education in any of the three territories of Canada or ten provinces have stayed in the region where their permit for study first expired.
Quebec had the highest retention rate of international students which was around 85 per cent. This was followed by Manitoba and Alberta which had a retention rate of 80 per cent. Retention rates were seen between 70 and 80 per cent in areas including Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia.
STUDENTS CONNECT WITH THEIR COMMUNITY
Students build connections with their peers during their studies. They also build connections with the post-secondary institutions and the community in Canada. These connections have increased the likelihood of international students settling in the province where they had completed their studied.
Also, It was seen that most foreign students stayed in their province of study where they initially appeared even after three years. Moreover, more than 50 per cent of international students stayed in-province or in-territory. This was seen in nine provinces of Canada out of its 13 provinces and territories.
However, the Atlantic provinces of Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island were excluded from this. In 2019, it was seen that nearly half of all new study permit holders were from India alone.
Also, For Indian students, Canada is the second most popular destination. Nearly, 1.83 lakh of Indian students have been pursuing education at various levels in the country. Canada is looking to facilitate retention of students in the province of study. Therefore, a research suggested to increase the number of slots for international students in Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).
