Indian students restricted as fraud concerns rise – Australian universities

Currently, from India, one in four applications are being deemed by the Department of Home Affairs as “fraudulent” or “non-genuine”. In 2019, surpassing the previous high of 75,000, Australia is reportedly set to enrol the highest number of students from India ever. Last week, the Department of Home Affairs told a federal parliamentary inquiry that from India, the rejection rate for applications is 24.3 per cent. This percentage is the highest since 2012.

A media report stated that students from some parts of India have been banned from two more Australian universities. Last week, Western Sydney University in New South Wales and The Federation University in Victoria wrote to education agents. The Universities instructed the education agents to no longer recruit students from Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. They also instructed to not recruit students from the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

The development comes when the Prime Minister of India spoke of more students from India and Australia living and studying in each other’s countries. Moreover, he spoke of bringing those experiences home. Also, the migration and mobility partnership arrangement were signed by the two nations. This initiative was taken in order to promote the exchange of students, researchers, graduates, and business people.

The Emerging Trend of Fraudulent Visas

The letter to the agents by the Federation University stated that a significant increase has been observed by the university in the proportion of visa applications being refused by the Department of Home Affairs from some Indian regions. This was hoped to be a short-term issue. However, now it is clear that this has become an emerging trend.

The Australian universities, last month, including Victoria University, Torrens University, Edith Cowan University and Southern Cross University had placed a restriction or ban on students who hail from some Indian states. This development was taken in response to an increase in applications that are fraudulent seeking to work in the country and not to study.

Increase in the Attrition Rate from Indian regions

In a message sent on May 8, Western Sydney University told the agents that a large number of Indian students who commenced study in 2022 intakes have not remained enrolled. Therefore, this has resulted in a significantly high attrition rate. The regions presenting the highest attrition risk were identified by the university as Punjab, Gujarat and Haryana.

The University message stated that the University has decided to pause recruitment from these regions in India due to the urgency of this matter with immediate effect. However, the message stated that the recruitment will continue as usual from all other regions in India. It was stated by Western Sydney University that the ban would be in place in May and June 2023, i.e., for at least two months.

Additional Measures to Curb the Issue of non-genuine students

Moreover, the University stated that additional measures would be taken in order to address the issue of non-genuine students from these regions who are enrolling with the university. Such measures would include making changes to application screening, increases to commencement fees and stricter admissions conditions.
