To pursue higher education, the number of Indian students who are going to Australia is moving towards the pre-Covid levels. A Data was recently released by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade). It stated that the number of Indian students who have started academics was 52,186 with Australian universities until June 2022.
A comparative look shows that there has been a considerable increase in such students. The figures show that in 2021, the number of students dropped to 48,346 from 63,264 students in 2020. There has been a steady growth in the total number of Indian students in Australia to pre-pandemic times.
However, there is a drop in the total number of Chinese students in Australia for the past five years. Also, an increasing number of Australian Universities are visiting India as Indian students have indicated a growing interest in studying in Australia.
They have been focussing to engage with Indian Universities for collaboration in research and transnational education opportunities. They are also reaching out to the wider market in India.
Australia\’s visits to India
In the past week, Austrade has been supporting visits of five Australian universities to India. These universities include La Trobe University, Macquarie University, Federal University, Australian Catholic University and Central Queensland (CQ) University. More universities are expected to visit India in the upcoming days.
Macquarie University has shared various data in a report in 2022. They had various new recruitment whose numbers stood at about 80 per cent of the total numbers. This commenced in 2019 in the pre-pandemic year. Based on the applications received, early indicators suggest that there will be a 100 per cent recovery in 2019 according to the authorities.
The trend in number of Indian students who have been returning to on-campus study after the pandemic has been steadily increasing. Science, Technology, Engineering and Management branches of higher education continue to remain the most preferred among Indian students.
However, Indian students are also seen selecting a more diverse range of courses after the pandemic. These include courses such as health sciences, environmental studies, sustainable development and specialised IT and AI programs.
The decline in Chinese students
There has also been a decline in the number of Chinese students. This is mainly attributed to the travel restrictions that have been a strict part of the Covid-19 management process in the country. Therefore, this has led to many students shifting to an online mode of learning.
The proportion of undergraduate (UG) students between 2019 and 2022 has increased from 20 per cent to 35 per cent. This can be attributed to a range of factors which include positive feedback from current students about their experience at Macquarie.

Currently, the ratio is 70:30 in 2022. This shows that 30 per cent of Indian students are pursuing UG courses. Indian students in the past used to travel abroad to pursue a Postgraduation degree after completing their undergraduate degree in India. However, it is seen that, in the last 15 years, Indian students focused on undergraduate study so that their smooth learning and work experience is supported in the best way.
