JN Tata Endowment Scholarship is a one-time loan scholarship program. This scholarship is meant for students from India who wish to begin their higher education at an international university. Only overseas higher education such as Master’s, Ph.D., and Post-doctoral fellowships are supported through this endowment. The endowment can be availed by students in any education stream.

Eligibility Criteria for Availing the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship
- Only Indian Candidates are eligible for this scholarship. They must not be older than 45 years as on June 30.
- With at least 60 per cent marks on average in their UG or PG studies, they should be graduates of a recognised University in India. Candidates are not eligible to apply if the UG degree is not from a recognised University in India.
- Candidates who are in the final year of their degree courses and awaiting results can apply for this scholarship.
- Even if the candidates do not have the admission/ offer letters from the Universities to which they have applied for the academic year 2023-2024, at the time of making the application, they can apply. However, once they secured admission, they must update their application status with the Endowment. They can do this by sending an appropriate email to jnte@tatatruts.org. They must quote the reference number in the form that appears on the top left.
- Candidates can apply at the end of the first year or the beginning of the second year if they missed applying at the beginning of their overseas studies to the J N Tata Endowment Scholarship. However, at the time of award of the loan scholarship, there must be a minimum of 12 months remaining in their studies, which is usually the month of July of any calendar year.
- Eligibility is also accorded to candidates who were awarded but could not avail themselves of the loan scholarship. The entire selection process must be followed by such candidates.
- Eligibility is also accorded to scholars of J N Tata who have fully repaid their existing loan scholarship amount.
Non-Eligibility Criteria for JN Tata Endowment Scholarship
- Candidates who did not get selected for the loan scholarship in the previous year or earlier are ineligible to apply.
- Candidates who are planning to study for one-year diplomas whose entry-level requirement is higher secondary level.
- Those candidates who are going overseas for conferences, seminars, workshops, training, undergraduate studies, paper presentation, and any post-graduate degree/ certificates/ diplomas through the online medium or distance learning are ineligible to apply.
- Students who wish to pursue UG and PG studies in India are ineligible to apply.

- The amount of the endowment varies from INR 1,00,000 to INR 10,00,000.
- Eligibility for the maximum amount is not accorded to all the selected candidates.
- At least 60 per cent of the marks must be secured by candidates in their last academic performance.

Selection Process for the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship
The selection process for the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship is divided into four phases. At the end of each phase, the candidates will be informed about the status of their applications.
Phase 1: Submission of preliminary details
The preliminary details must be submitted by the candidates in phase one. The preliminary details include personal and academic information, a statement of purpose and work experience. The following documents must be uploaded as a scanned copies:
- Candidate’s photo (500 * 500 pixels in jpeg format)
- Aadhar card
- Passport (first and last page)
- Pan card
- Scorecards (GRE/ GMAT/ TOEFL/ IELTS/ PTE)
- Transcript/s for each qualification
Points to remember:
- Importance must be given to participation in both extra-curricular and co-curricular activities apart from consistent academic performance.
- Extreme importance must be given to a good GRE/ GMAT/ TOEFL/ IELTS/ PTE score. It may be advisable to improve your scores if you have received low scores in any so that your chances of availing of the loan scholarship are increased.
- A score is assigned to the Statement of Purpose (SoP). Considerable weight is carried by the statement of purpose in the selection process.
- Three additional documents must be uploaded by working professionals which include:
- Work Experience certificate that is given by the previous employer
- Appointment letter that is given by the existing employer and
- Latest One-year ITR or pay slips for three months.
Phase 2: Online test
This test for the JN Tata Endowment Scholarship is based on Thinking Skills Assessment (TSA) and it is conducted only once. Those who fail to attend this test will be considered to have withdrawn. This test is not subject-specific. It contains some numerical questions. However, it also does not presume anything except the knowledge of arithmetic. Moreover, it does not involve any kind of difficult calculations. Within a week from the date of the test, the results of the test will be announced by email.
Phase 3: Interview
Some candidates will be shortlisted out of those who undertake the online test. They will then be sent for a technical interview. Moreover, information will be circulated to the remaining stating that their applications will not be considered any further. The final leg of the selection process is the interview stage. The application form must be submitted by candidates who are shortlisted for the interview. They must supply information on the applied university/ universities, source of funds, proposed plans, details of parents, and details of guarantor.
Candidates must submit their scanned copies of the following documents:
- Letter of admission
- Photo of the guarantor (500*500 pixels in jpeg format)
- Guarantor’s Pan card, Aadhar card, one-year ITR/ pay slip of the last 3 months
- Only one Letter of Recommendation (LOR) is required. The LOR must be addressed specifically to “The Trustees of the J N Tata Endowment”. It must be either from a Professor of the University or college. It must be from an employer in case the applicant is/was working.
From Late April onwards, the technical interview is conducted. Candidates must attend the interview in Mumbai in person or through video conference via Skype/ Microsoft Teams/ Zoom. The interview will be conducted by the Director of the Endowment and a subject expert. The highest weightage in the selection process is given to the performance at the interview.
‘Technical’ refers to the candidate evaluation in the understanding of their subjects in the current as well as future perspective. Candidates will be examined in depth and detail. They must be prepared with the knowledge of their subjects. Also, they must be thorough with their chosen areas of interest with any specialisation as indicated in their application form. Updation and confirmation must be given by the candidates to all the information related to their studies. Moreover, before the interview, candidates must upload the following documents as scanned copies:
- The final year mark sheets and degree certificate
- Certificate of scholarships/ prizes/ ranks (if any)
- Extra-curricular and Co-curricular activities
- Research work or Project work (only One)
- GRE/ GMAT/ TOEFL/ IELTS/ PTE Scorecard
Candidates will be assessed at the beginning of the 2nd year and also based on their first-year or semester transcripts.
