The Chairman of the University Grant Commission (UGC) stated that there will be no changes in the format of conducting the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) this year. Moreover, the good news is that the number of centres is increasing from around 450 to around 1000.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducted the first phase of the Common University Entrance Test in 2022. This was for admissions to UG and PG courses in 45 Central Universities. However, this examination was faced with several complaints of glitches.
Therefore, the National Testing Agency (NTA) was looking forward to making changes to the CUET examination this year. The National Testing Agency considered reducing the number of subject combinations that are offered. Also, they were looking forward to reviewing the number of cities in which the exams are conducted.
Some of the few glitches that were reported while conducting the Common University Entrance Test in 2022 included the delay in the intimation of exam centres and other technical glitches such as the slow upload of the question papers
Review Committee for CUET
A committee had been set up earlier to scrutinize the implementations of CUET. The vice-chancellor of the Central University of Punjab will serve as the head. When the status of these implementations was inquired about, the Chairman of the University Grants Commission stated that everything will remain the same this year.
There are no changes and the students will find the same choice of subjects this year. The format will also remain the same. The questions will also be in the multiple-choice format in the computer-based mode.
Last year, nearly 14.9 lakh students registered for CUET. These students were accommodated in 450 centres each day. Thus, the University Grants Commission is considering the extension of centres to over 1000.
It was stated that only 600 centres will be required per day with the number of registering students expected to increase. However, there will be extra centres on standby. This will help in minimizing the glitches and technical issues that were faced last year.
Moreover, the offer of the National Testing Agency for the students to choose a maximum of nine subjects from 27 domain-specific subjects and 33 languages will be continued. This year, CUET 2023 is anticipated to be conducted from May 21 to 31. This schedule was released by the National Testing Agency.
Common University Entrance Test was mainly introduced to provide a level playing field for the students from all the Higher Secondary Boards in India in order to acquire admissions to Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses offered by Central Universities.
