A situation panic has been created by thousands of CUET UG aspirants as they have been allotted exam centres that are hundreds of kilometres away from their hometowns. This situation has arisen in spite of opting for a centre close to their hometown while filling in their application forms. A wave of concern has been triggered by this issue among students. Students are expressing their worries and grievances on social media posts.
Several students have raised the matter with the body responsible for the conduct of CUET UG 2023, National Testing Agency (NTA). However, they have reported that no response has been received to their emails. Students are at a peak in their anxiety level as the entrance exam is just around the corner.
Exam Centre Allocations at Unexpected Places

The most severely affected are students in Jammu and Kashmir who hail from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. A student from Kashmir expressed her dismay by stating that her examination center is in Chandigarh which is almost 500 km away from her home time. Moreover, she is living in a remote area. Another student from Shopian, Kashmir stated that placing this additional burden on students is unfair as they are already facing so many challenges.
Intervention Demands
Action has been taken by the J&K Students Association by writing to Union Education Minister and Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor. They have urged the higher authorities to intervene in the matter. The National convenor of the association stated that immense despair has been caused among hundreds of students by the decision of the NTA to allocate exam centres outside Jammu and Kashmir.
Particularly, a severe impact has been posed to students who hail from financially unsound backgrounds as they are already anxious about the entrance test that is highly competitive. The need to allocate exam centres within the Union Territory was also emphasized in order to alleviate the burden that has been laid on the shoulder of the students.
Raising the Number of Applicants
In its second edition, the CUET-UG 2023 will be conducted from May 21 to 31. This year, the number of applications received is around 14 lakhs. From the previous year, this has indicated that there is a significant increase of 41 per cent. In the first edition, 9.9 lakh of students submitted applications while 12.50 lakh students registered had registered. In terms of the number of applicants, the CUET UG remains the second-largest entrance exam in the country after NEET UG.
