Conditions on Losing a Visa

For a residence permit holder who is residing abroad and whose residence permit card has been stolen, lost or expired, a D visa can be issued for entry. Also, an amendment has been made to the Aliens Act. This act will enable the Ministry for Foreign Affairs to grant a temporary residence permit to young people.

This permit is, especially for those, who hail from diplomatic families and arrive in Finland until the age of 20. For an extension of their residence permit, young people from diplomatic families had to apply to the Finnish Immigration Service. This was the case until now. In June this year, the D visa was introduced in Finland.

Under these legislative amendments made by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, specialists, high-growth startup entrepreneurs and their family members can be issued with a D visa. Changes would become effective on December 22. However, until spring 2023, some of the changes in the information system that are required for using this kind of visa will not be completed.

Finland plans to increase the number of work immigrants entering the country. This is to address the acute skilled labour shortage. It has also planned to triple international student placements by 2030.
