With the establishment of a small Unani clinic in 1906, the journey of Jamia Hamdard started. It was inaugurated on August 1, 1989, by late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Jamia Hamdard University was given the status of Deemed to be University on May 10, 1989, by the Ministry of Human Resource Development which is now called the Ministry of Education.

The admission process of Jamia Hamdard University, New Delhi, will be commenced from May 21 to May 31, 2023. Through Common University Entrance Test (CUET), admissions to 12 courses will be conducted. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct the entrance examination. Currently, programs of study are offered by Jamia Hamdard University in the field of Nursing, Medicine, Pharmacy, Engineering, Chemical and Life Sciences and IT Management among others. There are 13 schools and 38 departments at Jamia Hamdard University.

Program Duration at Jamia Hamdard University

A number of programs are offered by the university. The duration of the programs depends on the program itself. The university offers three years, four years and five years undergraduate programs depending on the course. For instance, programs such as Bachelor of Pharmacy and B.Sc. (Hons) in Nursing are of four years.

Similarly, a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy is also a four years course. However, students must take up a mandatory six-month internship program. The duration of the course for a Bachelor of Physiotherapy is also similar. The BA in Journalism and Mass Communication course is offered for three years and BA LLB is offered for five years. 

This year, through CUET, admissions to 12 undergraduate courses will be conducted. Such programs include:

  • BSc (Hons) – Botany
  • BSc (Hons) – Biochemistry
  • BSc (Hons) – Biotechnology
  • BSc (Hons) – Clinical Research
  • BSc (Hons) – Chemistry
  • BSc (Hons) – Computer Science
  • BSc (Hons) – Toxicology
  • BA (Hons) – Islamic Studies
  • BA in Journalism and Mass Communication
  • BA in Politics and Governance
  • Bachelor of Business Administration
  • BCom

Scholarships offered at Jamia Hamdard University

The Dean of Students Welfare (DSW) looks after scholarships for students. Tuition fee concession is provided by the DSW to students whose parents’ income per annum is less than Rs 4.5 lakh. On the basis of merit cum means and on a case-to-case basis, the students are granted fee concessions. The university also provides more scholarships in order to help needy students financially. Such scholarships include the Online Minority Scholarships at the national level, Online Prime Minister Special Scholarship Scheme, Online SC/ST and OBC Scholarships at the state level and Students Aid Fund.

Hostel facilities at Jamia Hamdard University

Six hostels are hosted by Jamia Hamdard University which is separate for boys, girls and international or NRI students. The facilities in the hostel constitute:

  • Single seater AC Rooms
  • Double seater AC Rooms
  • Double or Triple seater Non-AC Rooms
  • Dormitories

Ranking of Jamia Hamdard University

Jamia Hamdard University has been ranked 74th in the overall category according to the National Institute of Ranking Framework 2022. It is also ranked 45th in the university category. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited the university with an A grade.
