CUET UG 2023: 13.9 lakh applications received - 50% rise in female candidates

Central universities such as the University of Delhi (DU), University of Allahabad, Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Jamia Millia Islamia and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University have received the highest number of applications. Moreover, from the north-eastern region which includes states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim and Nagaland, there has been a 31 per cent increase in the number of registrations. 59,208 candidates registered last year for the exam. However, the number has increased to 77,365 this year.

Increase in the number of registrations

For Common University Entrance Test UG (CUET-UG) 2023, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has recorded 16.85 lakh registrations. Out of the 16.85 lakh registrations, 13.9 lakh candidates have submitted the application form and paid the fee. According to the NTA, in comparison to the debut edition of CUET in 2022, there has been an increase of 4 lakh registrations.

Increase in the number of females and students from various categories

Moreover, there has been an increase in the number of female candidates to nearly 50 per cent this year. However, the number of male candidates has gone up by 34 per cent. In CUET UG 2023, 6.51 lakh candidates are females and 7.48 lakh candidates are males out of 13.9 lakh candidates registered. Last year, around 5.56 applicants were male and 4.34 lakh applicants were female.

There is substantial growth recorded in the number of candidates among different categories. Candidates belonging to the Scheduled Tribes category increased to 95,119 in 2023 from 58,881 in 2022. Also, from the Scheduled Castes category, there are a total of 1,40,307 students registered for CUET 2023. Therefore, an increase of 35 per cent is recorded.

Under the OBC-NCL category, 4,61,022 registrations have been recorded. Therefore, there is an increase of 45.2 per cent. 6,42,443 registrations were recorded in the open category. This shows a rise of 39.6 per cent. Under the EWS category, there has been 60,611 registration. This shows a rise of 20.5 per cent from the previous year.

Increase in the number of participating universities

The Chairperson of the University Grants Commission stated that there has also been an increase in the number of participating universities in CUET UG 2023. In 2023, it has increased to 242 from the 90 participating universities in 2022. This significant rise shows that there is an increase in the popularity of CUET-UG. For admissions to UG programs, it is also becoming a popular option.

State-wise registrations increase

When it comes to the number of registrations, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Bihar are the top states. These three states received the highest number of applications even last year. Moreover, there has been a considerable increase in the number of students from Jammu and Kashmir. 82,655 students registered in 2023 as compared to 13,021 registrations in 2022. Therefore, there is a 6.3 times increase in applications.

The highest number of applications were received from Kerala among the five southern states which include Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Tamil Nadu. From Kerala, a total of 56,111 candidates registered. This shows a 51 per cent increase. From Tamil Nadu, there were 24,462 registrations recorded. This shows an increase of 45 per cent making Tamil Nadu stand in the second position. Moreover, for CUET UG 2023, students from 74 countries submitted their applications this year. The students have registered from countries across Asia, Europe, America and Gulf nations.

Admission to UG courses using CUET UG 2023

For admission to BA, BCom and BSc courses, the CUET UG score is used. Moreover, the score is used for admission to other programs which include Integrated dual degree BVoc, BBA LLB, BArch, BDes, BCA, and many more. For admission into engineering disciplines as well, the CUET UG score is being used by various colleges/ universities for admission. Also, the score is used for lateral entry of diploma holders in BTech, into the second year.
