CUET Topper explains the difference between the Class 12 Board Examination and CUET Preparations

Priyanshu Dixit wished to enroll in the BA Political Science program at the Hindu College. However, the cut-offs at the Hindu College were too high. Therefore, he was accepted into Political Science at Kirori Mal College. For BA (Hons) in Political Science, there are 20 seats at the Hindu College in the unreserved category. Moreover, the cut-offs were between 795 to 800 marks for those seats.

Priyanshu Dixit was unable to secure a seat at the college of his choice even after scoring 100 percentile in the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) 2022. He wished to enter the Hindu College for pursuing BA (Hons) in Political Science. However, he only got Kirori Mal College which was his second preference. In this article, he quotes his experience of his preparation for the CBSE Class 12 board exams and the CUET simultaneously.

Reason for not being able to secure a seat at the Hindu College

Priyanshu Dixit wished to enroll in the BA Political Science program at the Hindu College. However, the cut-offs at the Hindu College were too high. Therefore, he was accepted into Political Science at Kirori Mal College. For BA (Hons) in Political Science, there are 20 seats at the Hindu College in the unreserved category. Moreover, the cut-offs were between 795 to 800 marks for those seats.

The necessity of the NCERT syllabus

The first thing that he referred to for his CUET preparation was NCERT books. He made notes of all the essential information in the journal which he had prepared. The essential information included the dates, people, events and their contributions, and more. Regarding the CUET, there was initially a lot of confusion such as the syllabus and paper pattern.

Moreover, there was no reference material available for CUET in online or the market. Nevertheless, the preparation for the examination was essential and thus, he referred to the NCERT and the journal he prepared. Also, to practice for MCQs, he referred to some other books such as Together With by Rachna Sagar and Exam Idea by VK publications. NCERT is the fundamental requirement according to him and everything else is considered secondary.

Preparation for the Language Paper

The English paper was completely different from what he had studied in classes 11 and 12. Instead, it consisted of basic English vocabulary and language. He had prepared a pdf that included synonyms, antonyms, one-word subscriptions, idioms, poetic devices, and more. He added five new words each day to the list to enhance his preparation. However, English was the most crucial subject for him as it served as a game-changer. He had secured a 100/100 score in his domain.

However, he messed up in the exam. Since he had encountered confusion between novelty and nobility, he chose the wrong synonym. Therefore, along with losing the five marks that were designated for the question, he also lost one mark due to the negative marking of a wrong answer. Moreover, he lost one mark after the normalization of marks. He secured a total score of 192.408 out of 200 which made a lot of difference in his marks. Thus, he lost the cut-off marks that would have enabled him to enter his dream college.

CUET – A golden chance to fulfill your dreams

The results of his class 12 board examination were not as great. Moreover, the cut-offs at Delhi University are always high. He would not have got admissions with his marks, to the colleges at the north campus. He had thought that CUET was unnecessary initially. However, after receiving his exam results, he had a change in his views.

Your knowledge is tested through the CUET tests. CUET tests do not focus on testing the writing abilities of the students. Thus, you may score extremely well if there is a basic understanding of topics in contrast to the board examinations. All he thinks that must be changed is the format of the University of Delhi. The options are limited with Delhi University. The criterion is that, if you wish to take admissions at Delhi University, you must have the CUET subjects and domain as the ones they were in class 12.

There was stress regarding the preparation pattern for CUET and ways to attempt it as there was not much idea about CUET. However, during the examination, the pressure made him do better. He kept practicing for MCQs and other relevant topics after his board examinations were over. Also, as the syllabus was the same, the board exams also helped him a lot in the CUET preparations.

Negative Marking being the game-changer

It was necessary to pay close attention to the negative marking as it was the game changer. Many of his classmates could not get a good CUET score even after being toppers and good at studies due to the negative marking. Negative marking plays a beneficial role as it helps in keeping you focused and make wise decisions. However, not much of a beneficial role is played by normalization and his grades dropped heavily because of normalization.

Required changes in NTA (CUET UG 2023)

Proper machines must be provided by the NTA to the candidates in order to enable them to appear for the CUET or any other entrance test. As the exam center was the place of the first test that was conducted, it turned out to be a nightmare. The computer equipment was outdated. Moreover, there were numerous glitches, the center was at a far distance from home and the test was canceled at the end of everything.

Sincere advice to CUET aspirants

Candidates are sincerely advised to stick to the NCERT textbooks and keep a facts journal. Moreover, 50 percent of questions are based on reading comprehension.
