In India, the French Government offers a scholarship program known as Charpak. The Charpak scholarship is divided into 4 sub-programs. In public and private institutions, Indian students are allowed to study UG or PG programs in France through this scholarship.

Charpak Bachelor’s Scholarship

Charpak Bachelor’s Scholarship is offered to students who wish to pursue a bachelor’s program of full-time in France.

Eligibility of the scholarship
  • The candidate must be an Indian national or an OCI card holder
  • At the time of application, he/ she must be a maximum of 23 years old
  • The candidate must have never studied at an educational institution before in France
  • The candidate must have completed secondary school in India
  • They must have applied for an eligible bachelor’s program. The Program must start on 1 September 2023
Procedure of application

Before applying for the scholarship, it is essential for the students to have applied at a France institution for admission. You must submit an application on the online scholarship platform http://ifi.scholarship.ifindia.in/ in order to be considered for the scholarship. They must also submit the scans of the following documents along with the scholarship form:

  • Passport size photograph
  • Curriculum Vitae of a maximum of 2 pages
  • Copy of the passport
  • Scanned copies of mark sheet and passing certificate of Secondary school (X) and Higher Secondary School (XII)
  • Copy of admission/ acceptance letter from the French higher education institution
  • Letter of recommendation (optional)
  • French language certificate, if any (DELF/ DALF)
Criteria of Selection

Based on your academic excellence, you will be selected for the scholarship. Moreover, the consistency and quality of your statement of purpose will also bring you into consideration for the scholarship. For this scholarship, there is no CGPA/ percentage cut-off. Through email, awardees of the scholarship will be contacted.

Charpak Master Scholarship

Indian students who are admitted to France in a master’s program can avail themselves of this scholarship. Upon request and based on the results that the student has obtained in their first year of the master’s program, the scholarship is renewable once.

Eligibility of the scholarship
  • The candidate must be an Indian national or an OCI card holder.
  • At the time of application, the candidate must not be more than 30 years old.
  • The candidate must currently be enrolled in or have studied at an Indian Institution of higher learning. Otherwise, the candidate must be a young professional who has been employed in a company at the time of application for a maximum of 3 years.
  • Before applying for the scholarship, the candidate must have applied for admission at a French institution.
  • The course must take place in France. Under this scholarship, a semester abroad will not be funded. Candidates who are holding a Charpak scholarship and are completing their M1 in France can re-apply for a second year of funding so that they will be able to complete their M2. However, at the M2 level, there is no automatic renewal of the scholarship. At the M1 level, acceptance will be subject to academic performance. It will also depend on the nature of the master’s program and a new statement of purpose submitted by the candidate.
  • Knowledge of French is an asset. However, it is not mandatory.
  • The scholarship is available only for master’s degree programs offered in France. If you want to work on your master’s thesis or research project, you will not be eligible for this scholarship.
Procedure for online application

On the online scholarship portal http://ifi.scholarship.ifindia.in/ the aspiring candidate must submit their application. They must also submit the following documents along with the application:

  • Passport size photograph
  • Copy of the first page of your passport (with photo and expiry date). Please attach the proof of your passport application, if you will be getting your passport after the deadline.
  • Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages).
  • Copy of your admission/ acceptance letter from a higher education institution in France.
  • Copy of mark sheets and degree of Higher Secondary School (XII), UG and PG degrees. It must also include the marksheets of completed semesters of the ongoing degree.
  • Language of French, if any (DELF /DALF)
  • Document of employment/ internship record (if applicable)
  • Letter(s) of recommendation given from the current Indian university/ employer. Otherwise, it must be given by the institution last attended. As scanned copies, the original typed and signed paper letter(s) of recommendation should be submitted. Moreover, the letter(s) of recommendation should preferably be with reference to the scholarship. It has to include the signature and the contact details of the referee. Moreover, if possible, the letter can be headed paper of the institution and bear a stamp of the institution.

Charpak Lab Scholarship

The scholarship is open to graduate and postgraduate students who are pursuing studies in science, engineering, humanities and management. They must also attend an internship/ research project at a university during their academic break (May – July) or at a French laboratory.

Benefits of the scholarship
  • The candidates will be offered a monthly stipend of 700 euros for a maximum of 2 months provided by the Embassy of France in India. The scholarship must be preferably between May and July.
  • A fee waiver will be offered for the student visa and Etudes en France.
  • However, the scholarship does not cover medical expenses, travel insurance, travel expenses, or assistance with securing accommodation.
Eligibility of the scholarship
  • Applicants must be Indian nationals residing in India at the time of application. Moreover, at the time of application, they must not be more than 30 years old.
  • Currently, the student must be enrolled in an Indian institution of higher learning at the Bachelor’s or Master’s level.
  • The candidate must have an acceptance letter from a French laboratory or an institution where the research project or internship will be carried out. However, before applying for the scholarship, as per your research interest, you must approach the laboratory or institution on your own.
  • The duration of the research project or internship must not be less than one month. Moreover, it must not exceed two months. The awardees will have to cover the expenses by themselves for the rest of the duration, if the duration exceeds two months.
Procedure of Application

Candidates must submit the application at http://ifi.scholarship.ifindia.in/. They must also submit the following documents along with the application:

  • Recent photograph
  • Curriculum Vitae (maximum 2 pages)
  • Scanned copy of the first page of your passport (with photo and expiry date)
  • No Objection Certificate from your Indian institution. The NOC must mention that you are a student in their institution, and are selected for the internship and that your institution in India has no objection to your internship. The name of the French institution/ laboratory must be mentioned in the document.
  • Scanned copies of mark sheets and degree certificates from Higher Secondary School (XII), Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees must be submitted. They must also include marksheets of completed semesters of the ongoing degree.
  • French language certificate, if any (DELF/DALF)
  • Scanned copy of your admission or acceptance letter from the French laboratory or French Higher Education Institution. The exact dates of the program must be mentioned in the acceptance letter. You can attach an email correspondence to show that you are in the process of getting the acceptance letter if the acceptance letter has not been received before the deadline.
  • Document of internship or employment record (if any)
  • Letter(s) of recommendation from the current Indian university that the candidate is pursuing their education (optional)

Charpak Exchange Scholarship – Autumn Session (September – December)

This scholarship can be availed by Indian students from all fields and streams of study. However, they must be enrolled in an Indian institution at the Bachelor’s or Master’s degree level. They must also wish to undertake an exchange semester program that is offered for a period of one month to six months.

Eligibility of the scholarship
  • The candidate must be an Indian national residing in India or an OCI card holder
  • At the time of application, the candidate must not be more than 30 years old
  • The candidate must be currently enrolled in an Indian institution of higher learning. The Indian institution must have a tie-up with the French institution where the applicant will pursue an exchange semester. However, students in the final semester who are working on theses or research projects are not eligible to apply.
Procedure of application

Before applying for the scholarship, it is essential for the students to have applied for admission at an institution in France. The candidate must submit an application to the online scholarship platform http://ifi.scholarship.ifindia.in/ in order to be considered for the scholarship. They must also submit scanned copies of the following documents:

The bachelor’s degree marks sheets must also be submitted by the students pursuing the Master’s program along with their passing certificate.
