The National Testing Agency has conducted the first instalment of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET-UG 2022) and it is seen that the examination has created considerable confusion among the students who had initially welcomed it.
The students hoped that instead of applying for each university separately and appearing for different tests, a common entrance test would make life easier. Moreover, a separate entrance test would be costlier.
Students also claimed that the cut-off marks in institutions like Delhi University were arbitrary and discriminatory as several state boards in the past would cancel papers and award marks to the test takers which would give them an edge over the others.
Students also stated that with a prescribed syllabus by the National Testing Agency, it was easier to prepare. While students who perform poorly in the Board exams get an opportunity to do better in CUET, students who appeared in two board exams in 2021-2022 admit that CUET has added to the pressure.
The ICSE Board never awards 100 in English while the CBSE Board would often award a centum, thus making cut-offs were discriminatory for ICSE and state board students. However, CUET gives an edge to CBSE students as the syllabus for CUET is from NCERT books which are the course books mandated by the CBSE Board.
ICSE students had only one month to master the syllabus which the CBSE students studied in one year. The first entrance test has, however, been badly managed and CUET implementation left much to be desired.
Admit cards did not possess the key details such as the reporting time, examination centre’s name and address and as the cards were available only at the midnight before the test, it added to the anxiety. Moreover, until 11th July, many students were not aware that they will have to appear for the examination within a week.
Some students have their exams in July and some in August for the same subjects which are unfair as those who appear in August will have more time to prepare. Moreover, it is not known when the college admissions will begin.
Students who will be taking CUET for postgraduate courses claim that while the syllabus is specified for UG courses, it has not been the same for PG courses and no sample papers have been provided. Some students also feel that just like cut-offs, an entrance exam too will be excluding a lot of deserving students.
