Indians are the largest group in the UK

The UK Home Office data reveals that Indians continue to be the top nationality who are granted visas in the skilled worker category. Nearly 56,042 work visas were granted in the past year according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Indian students are the largest group of foreign students studying in the UK. Students from India have taken over the Chinese students. There is a massive hike of 273 per cent in visas granted over the past few years. This data was reported by official immigration statistics of the country.

The UK Home Office data reveals that Indians continue to be the top nationality who are granted visas in the skilled worker category. Nearly 56,042 work visas were granted in the past year according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Under the tailored Skilled Worker Health and Care visa which targets medical professionals, Indian nationals have represented the highest number of visas. The visa percentage has been noted to be 36 per cent of the total students. This has, therefore, reinforced the Indian contribution to the National Health Service funded by the state.

127,731 study visas were granted to main applicant Indian nationals in September 2022. This is an increase of 93,470 compared to 2019. Chinese nationals followed suit in second place who were granted sponsored study visas in September 2022. 1,16,476 visas were granted to the main applicants. This number is 2 per cent lesser than the number found in 2019.

NEW PROGRAMS

The Graduate Route visa was newly introduced in July last year. At the end of their degree, this will allow international students the chance to stay on and work. The Graduate Route visa was also dominated by Indians. It accounted for 41 per cent of visas total visas granted.

The special High Potential Individual visa was launched in May this year. This program aimed to attract the brightest graduates from top universities around the world in order to work in the UK. The HPI visa also saw a 14 per cent grant to Indian nationals. This incident occurred despite no Indian university being on the set of top global universities that were approved.

Study visas for Indian, Pakistani, Nigerian and Bangladeshi nationals are now three times higher compared to 2019. Over the past year, this is considered to be a major factor behind the immigration figures of the United Kingdom hitting record levels.

COMPLETE DATA

The ONS data on the whole reveals that total migration to the UK increased from 1,73,000 in June 2021, to 5,04,000 in June 2022. This is an increase of 3,31,000 post-Brexit. The record levels of long-term immigration can be attributed to various reasons such as:

  • End of lockdown restrictions,
  • The first full period of statistics following the transition since Brexit,
  • The Russia-Ukraine conflict,
  • Resettlement of Afghans,
  • A New visa route for Hong Kong British Nationals (Overseas).

International migration has been impacted by a series of world events in the 12 months to June 2022. Migration from non-EU countries is increasing, especially among students. More students arrived in the UK after lifting the pandemic restrictions after studying remotely.

There has been an increase in the number of people migrating for various other reasons such as:

  • Humanitarian protections
  • Family reasons

These factors are independent of each other. Thus, it is too early to estimate whether this situation will be sustained. This data is a concern to the Conservative Party-led government as its manifesto commitment is to reduce overall migration.
