Engineers - Are they career-ready?

This article reasons why practical training is necessary over classroom learning for students to be more career-ready.

THE CURRICULUM

Earlier, the engineering curriculum was focused on developing a deeper understanding of science, math and technology. With limited resources, the concepts in the books were explained by professors and lecturers.

However, the curriculum was very theoretical and only a few opportunities were given to see and experience some of the studied principles in practice. To see and work on certain aspects of computer engineering, one needed to enrol in on-the-job training and experiential learning during their work.

The IT industry was just beginning to take shape. Exposure was given to the foundation of computer science, rather than to specific programming languages.

The curriculum is redesigned to make it more outcome-based and knows real-world business needs. It also gives students knowledge of the core discipline along with a student’s ability to explore their individual interests. The curriculum also offers flexibility, i.e., a Fully Flexible Credit System (FFCS) that allows students to tailor their courses in the way they wish.

CAREER-READY OR NOT?

Our education was focused on learning technology concepts. Solving real business problems was taught only while on the job. Engineering graduates easily adapt to the corporate environment of today and easily understand technological applications.

Moreover, with early engagement with tech companies and the advent of internships, only minor training is required for a person to be career-ready. Engineers today have access to resources, mentorship and various learning avenues that helps in their development before acquiring a job.

Engineers are becoming aware of their career goals and are paving the way to reach them. The engineers of tomorrow are getting better equipped.

GROOMING THE NEXT-GEN ENGINEERS

Early grooming will prepare them for the industry. The industry as well as educational institutions should engage much early during the graduation years to prepare the students. A regular and conscious effort must be made to focus on fundamentals and work towards them.

Moreover, organisations that keep engineers at the core must invest in developing the skills of the existing talent pool. A good understanding must be developed of various domains and emerging technologies.

This will help in networking with industry experts and learning much more before they enter a corporate environment. However, on-the-job learning is considered the best way to train a graduate to make them ready.

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

The students have high expectations from organisations. Organisations provide sufficient opportunities for skill development. However, it is becoming hard for students to meet the requirements of specified skills in the corporate world.

An organisation-student collaboration at an early stage helps in shaping the talent pool and guides them in the right direction. Academic-industry cooperation will help in bridging the skill gap at various levels of the study program.

Students will be provided with a chance to work with industry and try to solve challenging and real problems. This will also keep them up to date with new technologies. Organizations play a major role in an individual’s growth.
