Explained: All you need to know about Delhi University admission through CUET
We explain how the highly regarded Delhi University (DU) will use the Central University Entrance Test (CUET) to admit candidates to its undergraduate programmes this year, after the government\’s decision to make it mandatory for all central universities.
What is the format and structure of the CUET paper?
CUET 2022 is a three-section computer-based test (CBT). The first component assesses a candidate\’s language abilities by requiring her to comprehend factual, literary, and narrative materials. Candidates will respond to multiple-choice questions in this phase of the test, which is divided into two sections: 1A and 1B.
The first section, Section 1A, must be completed in 45 minutes. It will assess a candidate\’s ability to communicate in English, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Urdu, Assamese, Bengali, Punjabi, and Odia, among other languages. At least one language from this section will be required for a DU applicant to take the test.
Section 1B must be completed only if a candidate chooses to pursue an undergraduate degree in any of the 19 languages listed below: French, Spanish, German, Nepali, Persian, Italian, Arabic, Sindhi, Kashmiri, Konkani, Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Santhali, Tibetan, Japanese, Russian, and Chinese.
The candidate\’s command of core subjects she desires to study at the undergraduate level will be tested in Section II. There are 27 domain subjects (or papers) in this area, and a candidate can test in up to six of them. This section has been divided into two parts by DU: B1 and B2. B1 is a list of 18 subjects that were already available at DU prior to the implementation of CUET. B2 is a collection of 19 brand-new subjects.
A applicant must take at least three domain subjects from Section II to be considered for most undergraduate programmes at DU. Candidates must, however, choose their subjects in accordance with the program\’s standards, which can be found at http://www.admission.uod.ac.in.
The final component of CUET 2022, Section III, is intended to assess the candidate\’s general knowledge. This portion, however, is not required; a student will only complete it if it is mentioned as a requirement for the programme to which she is applying. Section III, which will be based on current events, general knowledge, quantitative reasoning, and the application of basic mathematical principles, will take an hour to complete.
To apply to DU, how high should a candidate\’s Class 12 board test score be? What method will DU use to determine an applicant\’s CUET score?
Any candidate who has passed her Class 12 final exam from a recognised school board is eligible to apply. Even as it transitions to a new system, DU has stated that it will continue to honour applicants\’ \”highest performance.\” An applicant\’s percentage based on the four subjects in which she scored the highest would determine her admittance to DU at the time of the cut-off system. Her greatest performance in CUET domain papers will now be the deciding factor.
What if a candidate studied a topic in Class 12 that isn\’t one of the CUET\’s 27 domain subjects?
To begin, students should only take the CUET domain papers that they passed in their Class 12 exams. If a student cannot discover a subject in the CUET list that she is interested in, she must select the domain paper that is most similar to the subject she studied in Class 12. Because Biochemistry is not one of the 27 domain subjects, students who studied it in Class 12 will have to take the Biology test in CUET.
For B.Sc programmes, how will DU calculate the CUET score?
In this situation, DU will calculate merit based on grades in one language (from Section I) and three domain topics (from Section II). The language test must be passed with a minimum score of 30%. For example, to be admitted to BSc. Physics (Hons) or BSc. Chemistry (Hons), candidates must pass Section II\’s Physics, Chemistry, and Maths papers, as well as achieve a minimum of 30% in one language.
The entry requirements for a few BSc programmes are a little more demanding. Candidates for BSc. Maths (Hons) and BSc. Computer Science (Hons) must take a language test from Section IA, a Maths test from Section II, and two additional subjects, one of which must be from B1 (see list mentioned in answer to Q2). Candidates must select their CUET domain papers based on the qualifying criteria set forth by DU for each programme. http://www.admission.uod.ac.in now has the eligibility criteria for each programme.
What about bachelor\’s degrees?
Most BA programmes, such as Political Science, History, and Sociology, require the candidate to take one language paper from Section I, two subjects from B1, and one subject from either B1 or B2. So, for a BA (Honours) Economics degree, the candidate must take a language exam from Section 1A, a maths test from Section II, and any two domain papers, at least one of which must be from Section B1. The prerequisites for B.Com (Hons) are the same as for Economics, with the exception that applicants might choose to take Accountancy instead of Maths. The DU admissions website, admission.uod.ac.in, now has eligibility criteria for each subject.
What are the requirements for enrolling in undergraduate language programmes?
Students who studied the relevant language in Class 12 will be given priority for admission to language programmes at DU. If an applicant wishes to pursue a bachelor\’s degree in Punjabi but did not study it in high school, she can still take a language paper from Section 1A. Candidates who studied Punjabi in school, on the other hand, will have an advantage over those who did not. To apply for admission to the Punjabi programme, a student must take the Punjabi test in CUET under Section 1A, which consists of two domain papers from B1 and another paper from either B1 or B2.
Will there be entrance tests for professional programmes such as BBA, BBE, and BMS?
No, the BBA, BBE, and BMS admission tests are no longer valid. CUET scores will also be used to determine admission to these courses. Candidates for the BBA, BBE, and BMS programmes must take one of the language tests from Section 1A, the math paper from Section II, and the CUET general ability test (Section III).
What are the requirements for a B.El.Ed.?
Candidates must have received at least 50% in their Class 12 exams, according to NCTE 2014 standards. Candidates must take one language from Section IA, two subjects from the B1 list of Section II, and one subject from either the B1 or B2 list of Section II for the CUET.
Will certificates for physical education and BA (Hons) Music have any value?
The candidate\’s CUET score, as well as performance/trial/certificates, will be considered for admission to physical education or music-related programmes. Both will be given equal weighting. Applicants for Music must take one language test from Section 1A, a Performing Arts paper from B2, and any two subjects, one of which must be from B1. If a student did not study music in school, they can take one language test from 1A + any two topics from B1 + any one subject from B1 or B2. Can students apply for programmes outside of their school\’s selected track of study (science, arts, or commerce)?
Students can change streams at any time, and there will be no detriment to any student who does so. Students are not restricted from changing their streams at DU; for example, a student who majored in physics in high school is able to enrol in humanities-based undergraduate programmes. In this situation, candidates must ensure that they examine the eligibility criteria of the chosen programme and that they choose domain and language courses appropriately.
Is it possible for students who have missed a year to apply for admission to DU this year?
Students who took a gap year will not be at a disadvantage because they will be admitted to any of DU\’s undergraduate programmes without prejudice. These students will, however, be required to take CUET 2022.
