As fraud cases increase, student visas are curbed - Australian universities

The Department of Home Affairs in Australia stated that those applications in which fraud elements are detected are placed under the category of “non-grant”. This prevents a person from applying in a fresh manner for at least three to 10 years. At least five Australian universities have placed restrictions on the Indian students’ applications from at least four states namely, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh according to the Sydney Morning Herald report released last month.

Australia has seen a rise in the attempts to obtain student visas through malpractices from the time it lifted the restrictions on the entry of foreign nationals induced by Covid. Such fraudulent means are also seen from applicants from India. Indian students are the second largest cohort of foreign students in the Australian nation.

The Category of “Non-Grant”

The Department of Home Affairs in Australia stated that those applications in which fraud elements are detected are placed under the category of “non-grant”. This prevents a person from applying in a fresh manner for at least three to 10 years. At least five Australian universities have placed restrictions on the Indian students’ applications from at least four states namely, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh according to the Sydney Morning Herald report released last month.

There are around 89,700 Indian students, currently, in Australia. However, according to the Australian government data, the number of Chinese students stands at 1.25 lakh. Compared to 2022, the number of Indian students has increased by 27 per cent. However, a 4 per cent dip is recorded from the students of China.

Actions under the Guidelines of the Australian Department of Home Affairs

All universities pointed out that the actions they have taken with regard to restrictions on admission applications are guided by the guidelines of the Australian Department of Home Affairs. A confirmation has been received by three of those institutions, namely, Victoria University, Edith Cowan University (ECU), and Southern Cross University that the Indian students’ applications are facing additional scrutiny.

According to the QS rankings, Edith Cowan University is placed in the 601-650 band. It stated that it has paused undergraduate student recruitment temporarily from Haryana and Punjab in order to review its admission processes since January 2023. However, while Southern Cross University continues to accept applications from all Indian students, they are not unaware of the fact that a more selective position is adopted by some admission agents. Entry requirements must be met by all applicants, regardless of origin.

Moreover, Melbourne-based Victoria University stated that additional requirements are imposed for applicants from certain Indian states. However, any restrictions imposed have been denied by the University of Wollongong. Torrens University stated that applications are still being considered by the states in question.
