It is hoped that this time around 200 universities will register.

The application process for Common University Entrance Test (CUET) Undergraduate 2023 is coming to an end on March 12. Moreover, the students are in an anticipation of how the whole process will be moving. The examination is set to begin on May 21 and will be concluding on May 31. The Chairman of the University Grants Commission assured that the pattern of the examination will be similar to last time. Moreover, this time, efforts are being made to avoid glitches and make it a much smoother process.

The pattern will be the same this year with the online multi-choice-based examination. The examination will consist of sections 1 A and 1B from which Section 1A will be containing 13 languages. Students can opt for any of these languages. Also, as the medium of the test, they can write in any of these languages. Section 1B will be consisting of 20 languages. The languages will be Indian as well as foreign. Foreign languages include French, German, and Chinese. Students are allowed to choose papers from here also.

Section 2 consists of 27 domain subjects which include accounting, biology, zoology, mathematics, home science, physics, chemistry, etc. Section 3 is a general test section which is mandatory or optional depending upon the university. Any student who wishes to write the examination can take up this test.

Changes in CUET UG 2023 – This year

This time, Changes have been in the Common University Entrance Test – Undergraduate 2023 (CUET-UG 2023) to ensure a smooth process which includes:

  • Students were allowed to choose only 9 subjects last year but this time they can choose 10 subjects.
  • The UGC is planning to allot the first choice of exam centre for the students as much as possible this time. Moreover, plans are on the line to ensure that the exam centres are located within a 100 km of radius of their place of residence.
  • Students who hail from rural areas will be given the option to apply for their examination through exam help centres. 25 help centres have been opened by the University Grants Commission across India. Therefore, students can go to these exam help centres and avail help for applying online.

The Chairperson of the University Grants Commission also stated that plans have been made this time to ensure no delay takes place in the examination procedures and the academic year. Therefore, the academic session will be beginning by the first week of August. Due to technical glitches, last time, there was a delay in the admission process. These glitches can also be attributed to the recovery process from Covid. To avoid such issues, this time, the date of CUET was announced in December 2022.

Therefore, students, this time, can know that the exams will be held from May 21 to 31 well in advance. With the exams scheduled to be held earlier, the result is expected to be published in June. Thus, the process of admission will take place in July. This will enable the beginning of the academic session on August 1. Therefore, no delay will be encountered at all this year.

Last year, there were various issues. However, the scale at which the test was conducted must be taken into consideration. Nearly 14.9 lakh registration of students came up last year. Moreover, the examination was conducted in 5 weeks in 450 centres across India. However, the majority of the exams went smoothly.

Technical glitches and complaints were encountered only in some centres. Therefore, the UGC is looking into each centre this time for the availability of computers and proper infrastructure. Such centres are identified well in advance to avoid certain issues. Especially with their past experience, they already have an idea of the good centres, the centres with issues, those that need to be avoided and those which can be added. This exercise has already begun. Thus, the students need not be worried about the way the test is going to be conducted.

Under CUET, around 200 universities likely to register

Common University Entrance Test – Undergraduate 2023 (CUET-UG 2023) is mandatory in all 45 central universities. Also, the test is mandatory for all universities which have joined it. However, the exam is open to other universities as well and last time, around 89 universities participated. Now, the number had already crossed 150 universities. It is hoped that this time around 200 universities will register.

Many universities may not have registered with the National Testing Agency. However, they can use the score for admission once the test is conducted. The UGC Chairman stated that close to 200 universities will use the CUET score this time. This is due to the fact that admissions through CUET UG 2023 are a transparent process. Moreover, a level playing field is offered for the students. Also, the universities need not get involved in the hassle of conducting such exams all over the country.

Admission will be solely based on CUET scores similar to last year. This year too, the same pattern will be followed. However, exceptions are offered for some courses such as sports and performing arts. In these courses, some percentage will be given to practical tests. CUET has been adopted by Jamia university and Aligarh Muslim university. However, more courses are planned to be included this time by both universities under CUET.

CUET UG 2023 – Will it be a boom for coaching institutes?

Some people raise apprehension about the coaching business. However, one must consider the diversity of the students and how this diversity has increased since CUET. Unrepresented students from rural areas are now able to join universities. Also, students need not worry about scoring 90 per cent or 60 per cent in Class 12 board examinations. Anyone can apply for CUET and secure admission to top-notch universities.

Moreover, the syllabus of CUET is restricted to Class 12. Students who are appearing for the board exam must have stored the concepts fresh in their minds. It is enough and sufficient to score well in CUET if students can focus on the board exam and do well.

Moreover, IIT Kanpur is coming up with new a portal called Sathi. Sathi is an online platform in which students can practice questions and answers. Subjects with more science-based concepts are being included. However, plans are being formulated to expand the online platform to more number of subjects.
