The SAT was previously a pen-and-paper examination that was designed to test the mathematical and language skills of the applicants who are aspiring to study undergraduate courses abroad. The ability of the students was gauged through the verbal section. Students were tested on how they use evidence to support a claim or in certain contexts, the importance of vocabulary. Also, the math section was used to test the aptitude of the candidates in specific topics such as data analysis, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, complex numbers, etc.
The momentous shift of college board from physical to digital SAT has caused various confusions among the students who have been preparing in the older format. In the context of an ever-digitizing world, this is a necessary move. Though this new format is unfamiliar, it is not difficult to learn what it is all about. This article offers you insights on the new Digital SAT.
SAT Earlier
The SAT was previously a pen-and-paper examination that was designed to test the mathematical and language skills of the applicants who are aspiring to study undergraduate courses abroad. The ability of the students was gauged through the verbal section.
Students were tested on how they use evidence to support a claim or in certain contexts, the importance of vocabulary. Also, the math section was used to test the aptitude of the candidates in specific topics such as data analysis, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, complex numbers, etc.
This Digital SAT will be launched on March 2023. The names of the sections have been altered. However, they will still measure largely similar skills and knowledge. They include the use of reading or writing passages across a range of subjects, textual and quantitative demonstrations of command of evidence, high utility word emphasis and phrases in context.
There will also be a continued focus on maths as it matters the most for career and college readiness. However, there are a few differences:
Duration
This new scheme of Digital continues only for 2 hours and 14 minutes instead of the traditional 3 hours. Therefore, the test takers will be having more time to answer each question. Also, the Digital SAT Suite is shifting its focus towards the skills and knowledge of the students instead of the test-taking speed.
Sectional Changes
The verbal section previously contained two sections which included Reading and Writing & Language. Now, it has been merged into one Reading and Writing section. It consists of shorter passages with a single question instead of a few long texts with a wider range of subjects.
The questions have been divided into four sections namely Information and Ideas, Craft and Structure, Expression of Ideas and Standard English Conventions. The range of topics that are covered has been expanded in the quantitative aptitude section.
However, calculators will be allowed throughout the math section. Aso, the length of in-context questions have been reduced. The Math section has broadly been segregated into Advanced Math, Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis and Geometry and Trignometry.
Multistage Adaptive Testing
The Multistage Adaptive Testing is the biggest variation in the new format. Here, the SAT will adapt to present the questions that are more appropriate to the performance level of the students. The paper will consist of Module 1 and Module 2.
Module 1 will contain a mix of questions which are easy, medium and hard. However, Module 2 will contain a mixture of questions of difficulties of varying levels based on their performance in Module 1. However, students can navigate freely through the questions of a given module. They can also preview upcoming questions or mark earlier questions.
Preparations for the Digital SAT?
In order to prepare for Digital SAT, students must keep an eye on both the existing as well as new resources. Collegeboard has released four official mocks tests that you should definitely navigate into. They have also released adaptive testing on their testing app.
How should educators adapt?
It is more important to introduce deserving candidates to the world of overseas education. This education is, however, financially affordable. Only because the students don\’t speak the language of the SAT, 80 per cent of them do not enter into liberal arts education.
Incorportating SAT into high school curricula will help in familiarizing the students towards the highly coveted educational degrees. This will make the whole process more accessible. This will reduce the hegemony of a test preparation.
However, the students who perform well in SAT are awarded full or partial scholarships. Therefore, if this process can be facilitated, deserving students can gain the education that they wish and deserve.
