A Journey Towards Harvard Law School through perseverance and Growth

A Journey Towards Harvard Law School through perseverance and Growth

Most fields are generally fluid. However, some fields are rigid. For instance, you may not be eligible to study medicine and become a doctor in most jurisdictions if you don’t take up Biology in high school. Keeping their options open might be a priority for some students. However, for others, clarity is achieved by knowing what they do not want to pursue. Thus, through customized sessions, the huge demographic dividend of our country can be transformed into a powerhouse.

Bhuvanyaa Vijay of age 27 was the topper of ISC in 2013 with 99 per cent. At that time, she was a student at St. Joseph’s Academy, Dehradun. Later, at the National Law School of India University, Bangalore, she secured admission to the five-year integrated BA, LLB (Hons) program. She graduated with a CGPA of 6.72 out of 7.00 at the top of her batch and received 13 gold medals. She returned to academia after working for a few years as a research associate. Last year, at Harvard Law School, she began her LLM studies.

The best thing about the work she is doing right now

She was among a batch of 184 students from 63 countries who were pursuing their higher studies at Harvard Law School in law. The best thing about her current engagement is this diversity. She is able to strike up conversations with leading judges, prosecutors, policy experts, clerks from international Supreme Courts, law teachers, government officials and so many more in just one hall.

Some of them are accomplished dancers, chefs, novelists and athletes. She has found a huge opportunity to learn from and meaningfully contribute towards legal issues that are significant across the world and the issues that are confined within the home jurisdictions. She is trying to make the most of the opportunity bestowed upon her.

Habits from school or college life that have made her stand firm

Just one habit of hers has helped her stand firm and that is perseverance. She has persevered in taking care of her health, in studying or working, and as well as in interpersonal relationships. At times, you will have no wish to study or spend your time on activities that are essential to fulfil the goals of your life. You will find a lot of disappointments and unending strokes of bad luck.

According to her experience, the healthy way through such situations is to strike a balance between being empathetic and thick-skinned. Also, you must make sure that you put in a bare minimum of quality time towards achieving the goals in your life every day. This helps you maintain momentum. However, it is unimaginably difficult to regain the momentum once the flow is broken.

Above all, one incredibly important factor is grit. Therefore, on lazy days, try to fit in at least 15 minutes of exercise. However, you must fit in more time on active ones. Never forget to eat and sleep well. Moreover, read for 30 mins daily. Also, find time to speak to your loved ones. Being consistent with academic work is another crucial aspect. If you are to study, divide your syllabus into small portions that are manageable and master them one by one.

If you are writing or doing any kind of research, target a tiny portion, even on days that are uninspiring. Never act in haste during stressful encounters with other people. Assimilate the situation by taking your own time. This will help you in being quick to listen but slow to judge. Of course, none of this should cost your well-being. Therefore, at times, it is crucial to take things slow.

The one thing that she would have done differently in school, college and life

She describes herself as an extroverted introvert and according to her comfort zone, she does not interact with more than two to three people. Moreover, she enjoys most of her time doing things on her own. She feels that she must have been more proactive in ‘socializing’ back in her college days.

Now, she has realized that peers are important stakeholders in most professions. While interacting with peers, you learn from them, you argue with them, you get annoyed by some, you disagree, and a few try to pull you down while others stick their necks out for you. You grow as a person in every scenario. This also helps you forge lifelong bonds.

Reasons that helped her top the Board exam

First, she attributes her reason behind topping the Board exam to outstanding guidance from teachers and parents. Second, she states that consistent effort made her stand out in the examination as it is the key to achieving any goal. She was able to approach the vast syllabus efficiently by scrutinizing the portions that deserve mastery and repetition, and those which require less detailed evaluation. She also stated that she never studied for six hours daily, excluding school hours. On the other hand, she never left studying for at least 90 mins on any given day.

Doors that opened for her on being a national ranker

Each year, for Board toppers, BITS Pilani offers open admission without an entrance test. Thus, she could have pursued an undergraduate degree from BITS Pilani. However, she chose the law over the sciences. In the near future, no other doors opened. However, being a national ranker speaks volumes in the long run for you as it boosts your Curriculum Vitae, interviews, and interactions and offers you a good first impression.

It fetches you a curious audience if you are lucky. This is, however, enough in the initial stages following which you may grasp an opportunity. Therefore, you will be able to justify being a Board topper by exhibiting relevant skills. She believes that a decisive role was played in her LLM applications by her being a national ranker played. She is also lucky to be admitted to some of the top Law Schools globally which includes Harvard, Yale, Oxford, and Berkeley. However, the burden is immense on the flip side.

The difference between her comparing now and the time when she topped board examinations

She claims that she has grown in the Physical, mental, emotional and spiritual spheres. She states that in every situation, she had learnt to assume positive intent. Thus, she is prevented from overthinking unnecessary matters. Moreover, she has learnt the most from any experience.

Through legal thinking, she has learned to think like a lawyer. This trait has helped her reap immense benefits in the legal profession. However, if it is implemented in personal life, it is equally damaging. Therefore, she learned to internalize some important professional ethics. Thus, she is able to minimize work-related spillovers into her personal life.

The aspects that she wishes to change about her school education

At the young age of 13 years and then 15 years, students are expected to make crucial career choices. Therefore, the Indian school education system must equip students and parents with the relevant information, resources, and tools towards the end of middle school. Important improvements can be achieved through regular sessions with alumni, detailed laying out of every possible career choice, chats with experts from different fields, one-on-one counselling, psychometric and other relevant evaluations that help in scrutinizing the strengths of a student.
